Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society Cymdeithas Gorawl Cadeirlan Llandaf
Summer Concert at St Martin's
Music by Rachmaninov, Tavener and Part in the beautiful acoustic of St Martin in Roath
The summer 2016 concert saw the Choral Society temporarily depart from its normal home venue of Llandaff Cathedral to sing in the superb acoustic of St Martin’s Church in Roath.
The performance saw an eclectic mix of Rachmaninov, Bach, Tavener and Pärt. The concert commenced with three extracts from Rachmaninov’s Vespers (When Thou O Lord, Bogoroditsye Devo and Nunc Dimittis) that were sung ‘in the round’ and with the audience at its centre, a most dramatic start. The first half also included Tavener’s God is with us and Bach’s Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland.
Tavener by now well-known Song for Athene opened the second part to be followed by Bach’s An Wasserflussen Babylon before Pärt’s Berlin Mass concluded the evening. Dominic Neville sang tenor solo as well as conducting while John Cheer played organ.
